The Meersburg - landmark on Lake Constance

Walls from ancient times, large rough-hewn stones, strategically placed together for defense and offense: So is the King Dagobert tower in the heart of Meersburg. It proudly bears the name of its builder, which according to ancient legend is the Merovingian King Dagobert I. The castle was founded in the 7th century. High above Lake Constance the Meersburg can look back to more than a thousand years of European history. Kings, emperors, bishops have built on it. Walls like annual rings in a tree. Living history. The prince-bishops of Constance used the castle in 1268 as a summer residence and after the Reformation in the 16th century as the seat of government. With the secularization in 1803 it became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden, which moved for some time house the Baden Highcourt of the maritime province in the castle. Due to the high maintenance costs, the Meersburg but was sold in 1838. Since then she is privately owned.

The Meersburg was never conquered or destroyed. She was the first castle in Germany, which was attacked with guns, but the thick walls kept the 14-week siege in 1334 at bay. With foresight and cunning, the lord had taken great care in the security and defense of the castle. Details and strategy from which one can still learn from today.

Maybe you will one day stroll through Meersburg, feeling how the occupants sat together with singers and musicians in the courtyard, feel the walls echoing the clash of arms, the attackers being repulsed by the ramparts. See the armor flashing in the armory, you look down into the deep well, which reached to the height of the lake level. Imagine languishing in the shivering cold, like the prisoners in the castle dungeon. Also the tower, that Annette von Droste-Hülshoff used as a study, and their living spaces can be visited. The famous poet from Westphalia lived for several years there as a guest of her brother Joseph Freiherr von Laßberg on Meersburg. Her time there was of great importance for her work. She died in May 1848 during her time at the Meersburg. The Meersburg is accessible all year round as a museum. In the castle there is also a cozy café with terrace and beer garden.
